Though they may not have known it, I began this review with a sense of the weight of years. Otherwise, I adore the Utopias but I couldn’t get past it in lengthy auditions. The Utopia was more Sashimi than bœuf bourguignon. I never detected any kind of “Beryllium” character to the sound, nor any other unusual hardness to transients or other textures I’d typically associate with metal dome drivers or other exotic materials. Were I in the market for an endgame headphone and amp solution, that makes a very tempting deal. After Sennheiser, AKG and Stax definitely the best headphones I ever heard! Attacks and decays on Utopia seem a bit quicker sounding than HD800 and allow me to listen into the music better and ferret out some subtle details (on very familiar music) unheard by me until now. I was testing a view from other companies, but the combination of the Utopia with the Arche amplifier gives such an enjoyment and pure music reproduction. Enttäuscht bin ich von dem Zubehör. I had tried a lot of headphones on, at the Munich audio show, and found that many headphones did not feel "just right" for my long Danish skull. Can't recommend anything better. When I look back on all the dumb things I did as a kid, surely one of the dumbest was pitching rocks and dirt balls at a wasp nest. Dynamic range seems better than anything else I’ve auditioned, the difference between the softest and loudest sounds is very wide. Much better than the planars that I have, Focal Utopia has dynamics and punch, it is much more exciting than all the planars that I've heard. They all sounded identical, and when I gave them a few impulses on my basic headphone measurement rig, all the graphs came out looking equally similar. The hype is real as it truly brought out the very best from my songs I play it with. I was totally "blown away" from the sound. When late 19th and early 20th century classical scores with full sized modern orchestras call for loud crescendos the Utopia maintains composure better than anything else I've auditioned. Focal Naim America clearly has their fabrication process down here. This would seem contrary to most of what I’ve read of others impressions in comparing the 2, but perhaps this will change with break-in. I like the experience of listening to familiar tracks with the Utopia but I would rather live with the Clear or the LCD3f long term, at the expense of some detail and air. Plus, bundling them offers an appreciable cost-savings. This compliments the Focal Utopia perfectly, not hindering any of its good qualities, but giving it a tiny bit more meat on its bones, thickening the ultra-sharp 8K-esque images the Utopia renders, and sweetening the mid-range so that the 1.2khz peak seems ever so slightly milder. I eq’d this peak down by a few dB and found I was actually enjoying the slight forwardness it gave to vocals and solo instruments, and ended up leaving my EQ off. Above that it’s falling/flattish response roughly tracks the Harman curve, with perhaps another mild but not bothersome peak around 6khz. An honest 4.75 stars out of 5. Since my Utopia headphones arrived, my AKG K812 headphones have become a second class tool even if they are very good in capturing the lows, the mid and high frequencies with almost a flat frequency response. Overwhelming experience of reality in music listening. I suspect these pads will trap heat more readily than my HD800 during high humidity air-conditioning season, which for me is usually April thru November. Utopia sound AMAZING, just grab your set! I’ve heard and lived with some of the most exotic headphone setups that exist, and this one could easily be The One. Frequency response is a strength of the Focal Utopia, but it’s not its biggest strength. The Utopia is the current flagship model from Focal, retailing at $4000. Thus, Listen has an extremely dynamic sound, tight bass and remarkable tonal balance. Absolutely stunning sound right out of the box. Another achievement with Utopia is the removal from the conventional rotation included on the yoke and its integration into the headband to ensure a total purity of the design. Bravo! The best ever! In other words the reproduction is great for me - I have had only one issue with reproduction and that was Fryd by Cantus in DXD where it sounds like there was an underlying his on the recording -- possibly the digital version was made from a vinyl. They created even more significant improvements in the sonic transparency of all Hi-Rez music played, particularly in the Mid and the High Ranges of every song, when compared to the Clear.
